We live in a world capable of tracking our every movement, protecting properties, and enforcing countless laws. Yet when women and children face deadly violence, protection too often arrives as a promise made after their deaths.

• Imagine living in a society where stealing a car can trigger an immediate police investigation, where financial fraud can bring entire institutions into action, and where governments can mobilize extraordinary resources to protect borders, businesses, and political interests.

• Now imagine being a woman who has repeatedly told authorities that a man is threatening to kill her.

• She has messages. She has witnesses. She has evidence. She has fear so overwhelming that sleeping through the night has become impossible.

And yet, depending on where she lives and how the system responds, she may discover that the institutions capable of protecting almost everything else cannot guarantee her safety.

That contradiction should outrage every decent human being.

1. Because what does it say about our priorities when a society can invest billions in security but still leave women fighting to convince someone that their lives are in danger?

2. What does it say about justice when the threat of violence is treated as a domestic disagreement until a woman or a child ends up dead?

3. And what does it say about us when we have become so accustomed to hearing about murdered women and children that we barely question the systems that failed them?

But I am equally tired of being told that outrage is enough.

It isn’t.

The Problem Is Not That We Don’t Know. It’s That We Keep Accepting It.

We know that every day women are killed by intimate partners and family members. We know that domestic violence can escalate. We know that threats, stalking, coercive control, and previous assaults can signal serious danger.

According to UN Women and UNODC estimates, approximately 50,000 women and girls worldwide were killed by intimate partners or other family members in 2024.

Yet the distance between knowing what is wrong and doing what is necessary remains enormous.

And the suffering of women and children has been tolerated for far too long.

When a Man Decides That a Woman’s Freedom Is an Offense.

There is a particular kind of entitlement that deserves far more scrutiny than it receives.

The belief that a woman who chooses to leave, reject, disagree with, or live independently of a man has somehow committed an offense against him.

• A woman says the relationship is over.

  He decides it cannot be.

• She wants to move forward.

  He decides she must remain emotionally, financially, or physically available to him.

• She chooses herself.

  He interprets that choice as a personal humiliation.

In the most dangerous cases, that entitlement becomes a justification for violence.

And this is where society must stop confusing possession with love.

She is a human being with the right to make decisions that another person may dislike.

A man’s disappointment is not a woman’s death sentence.

That principle should be taught in homes, classrooms, sports clubs, religious communities, and every institution that helps shape how boys understand themselves and their relationships with others.

Because we cannot build a safer future while continuing to raise children in environments where domination is admired, and women’s independence is treated as a threat.

And What About the Children?

There is something almost unbearable about imagining a child caught in the violence of adults.

A child who should be thinking about tomorrow’s school assignment, a birthday celebration, or which friend to invite over for the weekend.

Instead, that child may be learning to recognize danger from the sound of footsteps.

Some children are murdered by adults entrusted with their care. Others are killed in acts of revenge against a partner. Still others lose their mothers to violence and must somehow grow up around an absence that changes everything.

• Imagine a little girl standing in her bedroom, holding a drawing she made for her mother, not yet understanding why her mother will never see it.

• Imagine a boy reaching for his mother’s hand in a crowded place before remembering that she is gone.

These images are painful because they represent the kind of ordinary love that violence destroys.

And we should resist the temptation to discuss these children only as secondary victims of violence against women.

• They have their own rights.

• Their own futures.

• Their own need for protection.

A child’s home should never be the place they fear most.

Why Are We More Comfortable Managing Violence Than Preventing It?

Modern society has developed sophisticated systems for anticipating risk.

Banks monitor suspicious transactions. Businesses assess potential losses. Governments study threats to national security.

We understand prevention when money, infrastructure, and institutional stability are at stake.

So why does prevention so often become uncertain, underfunded, or fragmented when the threatened life belongs to a woman or a child?

It’s safe to say that predicting human violence is complex. No system can eliminate every risk, and not every warning sign leads to murder.

But complexity cannot become an excuse for institutional paralysis.

• When credible threats are reported, authorities need the resources, training, and legal mechanisms to assess danger and respond effectively.

• When women need emergency accommodation, the availability of protection should not depend on whether a shelter happens to have space.

• When perpetrators violate protective orders, those violations must be taken seriously.

• And when public agencies fail to act on repeated warnings, those failures deserve independent examination.

Accountability is not simply about imposing a prison sentence after a murder.

It is also about asking whether a preventable death occurred because the people responsible for responding to danger lacked resources, ignored evidence, or failed to coordinate.

Justice that begins only after burial is justice arriving too late.

This Is Not a War Against Men. It Is a Demand for Responsibility.

There will be people who read this article and immediately become defensive.

They will insist that not all men are violent.

Of course not.

Millions of men are loving fathers, respectful partners, compassionate friends, and committed advocates for women’s safety.

But the existence of good men does not make violence committed by other men less urgent.

Nor should the conversation become an endless exercise in reassuring men that they are not personally being accused.

We can acknowledge individual innocence while demanding collective responsibility for changing harmful social norms.

And men have an indispensable role in that work.

• A man does not need to wait until a woman is murdered to question a friend’s threatening behavior.

• He does not need to be a father to care about children’s safety.

• He does not need to have a daughter to understand that women deserve freedom.

What we need is not performative declarations of respect for women but consistent behavior that makes that respect meaningful.

Challenge the friend who jokes about hurting his ex-partner. Refuse to excuse harassment. Take credible threats seriously. Support survivors without turning their experiences into opportunities for self-congratulation.

And teach boys that being rejected, contradicted, or left by a woman is not an attack on their manhood.

The measure of a man’s character is not how much control he can exercise over others, but how he behaves when he has none.

The Real Scandal Is What Happens After the Public Forgets.

Public attention has a short lifespan.

A particularly horrific killing can dominate the news for days. Politicians may express outrage. Demonstrations may fill the streets. Governments may announce inquiries.

Then another crisis captures the public imagination.

But for the family of the murdered woman, nothing returns to normal.

Her absence becomes part of every birthday, every holiday, every family gathering.

And the question of whether justice will be served may remain unanswered for years.

That is why meaningful change cannot depend on public anger remaining fashionable.

• We need sustained pressure for stronger prevention systems, properly resourced investigations, accessible survivor services, transparent reporting on outcomes, and effective legal accountability.

• We need journalists who investigate patterns of institutional failure rather than treating every killing as an isolated spectacle.

• We need voters who ask candidates what concrete measures they will fund, not merely whether they condemn violence.

• And we need communities willing to support organizations doing the difficult, often invisible work of keeping people safe.

The purpose of outrage should not be to demonstrate how deeply we feel.

It should be to change what happens next.

We Don’t Want Another Apology. We Want a Different Future.

• We want to live in a world where a woman can end a relationship without calculating whether doing so might cost her life.

• Where a mother does not have to choose between financial survival and physical safety.

• Where children do not learn fear before they learn freedom.

• Where the authorities take credible threats seriously, and where justice is neither a privilege for the wealthy nor an impossible journey for the vulnerable.

Is that too much to ask?

Absolutely not.

And perhaps that is what makes this crisis so infuriating.

We are not demanding an extraordinary privilege.

We are demanding the most basic condition of human existence: the right to remain alive.

So be angry. Be uncomfortable. Refuse to accept another carefully rehearsed expression of sympathy as evidence that meaningful action has been taken.

But do more than express anger.

• Support local women’s shelters.

• Demand accountability from elected representatives.

• Challenge dangerous attitudes within your own circles.

• Help strengthen the organizations protecting women and children.

• Learn how to respond safely when someone discloses abuse.

Because somewhere, someone is making a decision today that could determine whether a woman lives to see tomorrow.

Our response cannot be another collective shrug.

I am so fucking sick and tired of men murdering women and children and facing zero consequences.

And we refuse to accept a future in which our greatest achievement is learning how to mourn them more eloquently.

We have spent enough time asking how many more women and children must die before something changes.

Federal agents reportedly seized Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar’s cellphone during a search of her Washington, D.C., home this week as part of an investigation into potential immigration-related offenses. Authorities have also issued approximately a dozen subpoenas, including several directed at members of her family, according to individuals familiar with the case.

The search took place just three weeks before the midterm elections, during a period when the Justice Department traditionally avoids investigative actions that could influence electoral outcomes.

The seizure of a sitting congresswoman’s phone also raises constitutional considerations. The Speech or Debate Clause protects lawmakers from being questioned about legitimate legislative activities, requiring special precautions when investigators obtain materials that may contain congressional communications.

Approximately a dozen subpoenas were reportedly issued on Friday, including to Omar’s relatives. The requests are connected to a federal grand jury in Minnesota, the state she represents.

Omar herself was not subpoenaed, although investigators reportedly want to interview her sister, whom they had not yet reached.

The investigation is being handled by Homeland Security Investigations, federal prosecutors in Minneapolis, and the Justice Department.

Neither Omar’s office nor federal authorities provided substantive public details about the allegations in the original account.

Omar, however, strongly condemned the investigation in a statement published Monday, describing it as an attempt to intimidate political opponents.

“Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” she wrote.

The congresswoman accused President Donald Trump of conducting a years-long campaign against her through accusations and political attacks, describing the latest developments as another escalation.

According to individuals familiar with the investigation, federal authorities are reviewing documents, witness testimony, and information from whistleblowers concerning Omar’s immigration history.

Investigators are reportedly examining details surrounding her immigration status, including her birthdate.

Omar was born in Somalia and immigrated to the United States with her family during the 1990s. She became a naturalized American citizen at age 17, when minors could obtain citizenship through a qualifying parent under applicable immigration laws.

The investigation could face legal complications because many federal offenses are subject to a five-year statute of limitations. However, authorities could examine more recent actions involving Omar or her relatives if those actions fall within the relevant legal timeframe.

Omar, a prominent member of the progressive congressional group known as “the Squad,” has frequently faced criticism from Trump over her political positions and Somali heritage.

Asked Monday whether he had advance knowledge of the search, Trump said federal authorities were examining Omar closely while repeating his criticism of the congresswoman.

“I think she’s a terrible person, but that’s really up to the DOJ,” Trump said.

Although federal authorities are reportedly examining potential criminal violations, the existence of an investigation does not establish wrongdoing.

For now, questions remain about the evidence gathered, whether prosecutors will pursue charges, and how the investigation could affect the political landscape ahead of the midterm elections.

The state’s 113 counties that voted for Donald Trump by 20 percentage points or more in 2024 combined to hit 54% of the votes they cast on the first day of early voting in 2024, according to state data as of the end of the day Tuesday.

That’s well behind the 64% reached by the 12 counties that voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris by that margin.

The counties in the middle, which voted for either Trump or Harris by less than 20 points, were at 66% of their 2024 first-day turnout.

While Georgia voters don’t register by party, this aligns with county and party trends we’ve seen in Virginia and Ohio, where Democrats appear more enthusiastic to vote early, especially at the very start of in-person voting.

It remains to be seen how these trends will hold up. In both Virginia and Ohio, the Democratic advantage has narrowed somewhat since early in-person voting started, but still remains quite positive for the party relative to recent years.

About 190,000 early votes were cast in Georgia Tuesday, which set a record for first-day votes during the midterm election cycle, according to the secretary of state’s office, although the voting window started a day later than in 2022 due to Monday’s holiday.

Early voting data doesn’t reveal who voters are casting ballots for — and with more than two weeks of early voting left, plus Election Day, there is plenty of time for these trends to change.

With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, a striking political contrast is emerging between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Kamala Harris. While Trump has reportedly concentrated his campaign appearances in reliably Republican states, Harris is preparing to enter some of America’s most competitive political battlegrounds.

For Trump, whose political influence has largely depended on his ability to mobilize conservative voters, the decision to focus on Republican strongholds invites scrutiny. The Real Test Will Come in November.

Ultimately, the contrasting campaign strategies reflect a fundamental reality of American politics: Popularity within a political party does not automatically translate into broader electoral appeal.

Trump remains an influential Republican figure capable of commanding national attention and mobilizing loyal supporters. Yet his ability to help candidates in competitive states remains an important political question.

Harris faces a different challenge. She must demonstrate that her political visibility can produce meaningful electoral results despite her previous presidential defeat.

Both politicians have something to prove.

As November approaches, their campaign appearances will offer clues about how Democrats and Republicans view their respective political strengths and vulnerabilities.

When another survivor is forced to defend her credibility while the man accused of violating her is surrounded by lawyers, public relations advisers, loyal friends, and institutions determined to protect their own reputations.

I have reached that point.

I am sick of watching women carry the consequences of sexual violence while too many perpetrators escape meaningful accountability. Sick of hearing how a man’s promising career, prestigious position, family reputation, or supposedly bright future must be considered before justice can be served.

What about her future?

She could be:

• Your sister

• Your niece

• Your Aunt

• Your Mother

• Or simply, your wife.

What about the woman who cannot sleep without reliving what happened? What about the young girl who abandoned her education because the institution that promised to protect her failed to act? What about the survivor who watches the man she accused continue living as though nothing happened while her own life has been turned upside down?

And what about the women who never report their assaults because they have already seen what happens to those who do?

We have built a world in which women are repeatedly asked to survive what powerful institutions refuse to confront.

And then we have the audacity to call that justice.

Stop Asking Women Why They Didn’t Report. Start Asking Why Reporting So Often Fails Them.

Every time a sexual assault allegation becomes public, the interrogation begins.

• Why didn’t she report immediately?

• Why did she continue speaking to him?

• Why didn’t she scream?

• Why didn’t she fight harder?

• Why did she wait years?

• Why was she drinking?

• Why was she wearing that?

The questions arrive like clockwork, turning the survivor into the person standing trial in the court of public opinion.

Meanwhile, the accused man’s reputation becomes a national emergency.

We hear about his accomplishments, his family, his professional achievements, and the devastating consequences an allegation might have on his future.

Or, we do not hear it at all, because the case is pre-concluded before it even begins.

Apparently, a woman’s trauma is unfortunate, but a man’s damaged reputation is a tragedy.

Presuming innocence in a courtroom must never mean presuming dishonesty in every woman who reports sexual violence.

There is a difference between protecting legal rights and constructing a culture in which reporting rape becomes another form of punishment.

And far too often, that difference disappears.

A Woman’s Body Is Not the Price of a Man’s Promising Future.

Perhaps one of the most infuriating arguments surrounding sexual violence is the suggestion that accountability might destroy a man’s future.

We have heard variations of this argument since the beginning of time.

He is talented. He is young. He has worked hard. He has a family. He has so much potential.

And?

1. Since when did potential become a defense against accountability?

2. Since when did professional achievement make someone less responsible for their actions?

• A woman does not become less deserving of justice because the person who harmed her has an impressive résumé.

• A university degree is not immunity.

• A sporting achievement is not immunity.

• Political influence is not immunity.

• Wealth is not immunity.

• Marriage is not immunity.

• Outdated traditional norms are not immunity.

• And being a man certainly is not immunity.

Yet institutions too often behave as though men are simply too valuable to hold accountable.

That message does not merely betray one woman.

It warns every other woman watching that speaking out may cost her more than remaining silent.

Rape Culture Does Not Survive on Violence Alone. It Survives on Excuses.

Sexual violence is not sustained only by those who commit it. It is also enabled by environments that minimize, excuse, conceal, or normalize abusive behavior.

• It survives when friends dismiss warning signs because the accused is someone they like.

• It survives when employers quietly move alleged offenders into different positions rather than properly investigating complaints.

• It survives when universities treat reports of sexual violence primarily as threats to institutional reputation.

• It survives when families pressure survivors to remain silent to avoid embarrassment.

And it survives when public conversations become more concerned with whether a woman has ruined a man’s life than whether someone has ruined hers.

We need to stop pretending that silence is neutrality.

When institutions have credible information about sexual violence and deliberately refuse to act, their inaction can create opportunities for further harm.

When witnesses are intimidated, evidence is ignored, or complainants are punished for speaking, the system is no longer simply failing.

It is helping sustain the conditions in which abuse thrives.

A society cannot claim to oppose rape while repeatedly rewarding the silence that protects it.

Stop Teaching Women to Live in Fear While Refusing to Confront Men’s Behavior.

Think about the advice girls receive as they grow up.

• Don’t walk alone at night.

• Don’t leave your drink unattended.

• Don’t trust strangers.

• Don’t wear something that attracts the wrong attention.

• Don’t go home with someone you barely know.

Girls are taught to calculate danger before they have even learned to understand the world.

Their freedom comes with instructions. Their independence comes with warnings. Their ordinary existence comes with precautions.

• But where is the equally relentless social pressure on men to respect consent, recognize boundaries, intervene when friends behave abusively, and reject sexual entitlement?

• Why are women expected to organize their entire lives around preventing violence while society struggles to demand the most basic standard of behavior from men?

Of course, personal safety advice can be useful. But safety precautions cannot replace accountability.

Women should not have to become experts in avoiding assault simply to participate in ordinary life.

And rape is not caused by a woman’s clothing, alcohol consumption, friendliness, sexual history, or decision to trust someone.

Responsibility belongs to the person who commits the assault. Period.

That principle should be so obvious that it barely requires stating.

The fact that it still does is an indictment of our culture.

Young Women Are Not Disposable.

There is something especially disturbing about the vulnerability of young women navigating schools, universities, workplaces, and relationships where power is often unequally distributed.

A young woman reporting sexual assault may find herself confronting someone older, wealthier, more influential, or better connected.

• She may fear losing her scholarship, employment, social circle, housing, or educational opportunities.

• She may be pressured to protect the institution’s image rather than encouraged to protect herself.

• And she may discover that the people responsible for safeguarding her are more interested in avoiding controversy than confronting misconduct.

What does that teach young women?

That their bodies are negotiable? That their suffering is inconvenient? That justice depends on whether the accused has more influence than they do?

Absolutely fucking not.

Young women deserve educational environments where complaints are investigated independently, retaliation is prohibited, and meaningful support is available without requiring survivors to surrender their dignity.

Their futures matter just as much as anyone else’s.

Enough Statements. Enough Performative Outrage. We Need Consequences.

Every institution seems capable of issuing a beautifully worded statement condemning sexual violence.

Wonderful.

Now show us the evidence.

• Where are the independent investigations?

• Where are the transparent procedures?

• Where are the protections against retaliation?

• Where is the funding for survivor services?

• Where are the consequences when misconduct is established?

Words without action are public relations.

And women deserve more than public relations.

• We need governments to invest in properly trained investigators, accessible forensic services, survivor-centered legal support, and judicial systems capable of handling sexual violence cases without unnecessary delays.

• We need institutions to establish independent reporting channels, preserve evidence, enforce anti-retaliation protections, and publish meaningful accountability measures while respecting privacy and due process.

• We need employers and universities to stop treating sexual assault complaints as inconveniences to be managed.

• We need comprehensive consent education that teaches young people not merely how to avoid danger but how to respect another person’s autonomy.

• And we need men to challenge other men.

• If you are a policymaker, strengthen the systems that investigate sexual violence and protect survivors.

• If you lead a university, ensure that reporting sexual assault does not become an academic or social death sentence.

• If you are an employer, build a workplace where complaints can be raised without fear of retaliation.

• If you are a journalist, stop sensationalizing survivors’ experiences while treating accused men’s reputations as the central tragedy.

• If you are a parent, teach your sons that consent is not negotiable and that respect is demonstrated through behavior, not slogans.

• If you are a man who believes sexual violence is wrong, make that belief visible when it is uncomfortable, when your friends are involved, and when silence would be easier.

• You do not owe the public your trauma as proof that sexual violence deserves attention.

• You do not have to disclose your experience to become part of the movement for change.

Our collective responsibility is to build a world where justice does not depend on how loudly a survivor can scream before someone finally listens.

1. I refuse to accept a world where women are expected to live with the consequences of sexual violence while those responsible can too often walk away without accountability.

2. I refuse to accept that a man’s career should automatically command more sympathy than a woman’s violated autonomy.

3. And I refuse to accept that another generation of young women must inherit the same institutional failures, the same degrading questions, and the same exhausting struggle to be believed.

Anger alone will not change the law. Outrage alone will not reform institutions. A viral hashtag alone will not protect the next woman.

But organized public pressure can force change. So, this is a call to come together and begin to:

Demand better laws. Demand adequately funded investigations. Demand survivor protections. Support organizations providing legal assistance and trauma-informed care. Challenge institutions that conceal misconduct. Vote for leaders who treat sexual violence as a serious public responsibility.

And keep demanding evidence that promises are being fulfilled.

Because the ultimate measure of our world is not how passionately we condemn rape after another horrifying headline.

It is whether we build systems that prevent violence, investigate allegations fairly, protect survivors, and impose meaningful consequences when guilt is established.
